Shining Light On The Atheist Problem:
An Analogy Based On Scripture

First, the Biblical data:

The Bible declares that God is light - Spiritual Light (Psalm 27:1; 1 John 1:5).

And Jesus Christ, God the Son in flesh, is referred to as being this light on earth (John 1:4-5; John 1:9).

Jesus himself claimed to be this light (John 8:12; John 9:5; John 12:35-36; John 12:46).

This light exposes the unbeliever's sin (Psalm 90:8; Ephesians 5:13; Hebrews 4:12-13).

But the unbeliever does not want his sin exposed, therefore he hates the light, and as such, scurries into the darkness of willful ignorance (Job 24:13-17; Isaiah 2:19-21; Hosea 10:8; John 3:19-21; Revelation 6:15-17).

The Analogy:

The atheist is like a leper who does not want to admit that he is a leper. The light exposes his leprosy (representing sin), therefore he crawls deep into a cavern far enough down where thè light no longer reaches him. In this darkness he no longer sees the leprosy upon his skin and therefore declares that he is in fact not diseased (spiritually clean - a good person).

To keep up this willful ignorance, he declares there is no light. He shouts, "Just look around, there is no evidence for light!"

However, from every location on the cavern's floor, the entrance up at the top can be clearly see with the light from above shining through it.

The atheist simply refuses to look up to see that light.
